memories press on

Yet you grip my heart a little tighter,

Every time I seem to forget,

Something about you seems to come back,

And linger a little longer,

When I say,

Enough is enough,

You suddenly appear,

I reach out in the dark,

Just to see if you’re still here,

So I nestle in a little closer,

I grab your hand,

Like I have a million times before,

And you rub my palm with your thumb,

We say nothing,

It’s the late hours of the night,

Or the early mornings with the sun rising through my windows,

I see you there,

And just as my hopes rise and fall,

Your chest does too,

The sun flickers upon my face,

Another day has risen,

Another cold night has passed,

And memories press on.
